Don't Look Away
Solo Side Project
-
Developed using Unreal Engine 5.
About the project
Don't Look Away is a free roam survival horror game where the player is tasked with surviving for as long as possible; all while evading a creature in the darkness.
Your only tool, a flashlight and your eyes, the creature will not move while it is being looked at.
If you stare at the creature for too long, you will begin to hear voices all around you and go insane.
Manage your resources wisely if you wish to survive....
How it was conceived
While teaching my students at university, I like to create small projects to help teach and push for a more interactive way of teaching through coding live with my students. I decided to create a walking character with a flashlight and a simple AI enemy that freezes when you look at them.
I thoroughly enjoyed working on that project with them, going through how NavMesh works as well as creating the unique locomotion states for the AI enemy to know when it is being looked at by the player.
Most of the games I have created involves shooting at enemies but I decided to flip it on it's head and create a game that you cannot shoot your way out of, only run.
I have been working on this project for around 2 months and I feel I have created a project worthy of the survival/horror genre.
